We all think we know The Four Seasons by heart — which is exactly what makes the wager interesting. Each concerto comes with a written programme: the bird of spring, the sleeping shepherd, the grape harvest, the north wind. The choreography takes them at their word.
The stage sheds its skin four times. The acid green of spring gives way to the burnt gold of summer, then the red of autumn, then the near-white blue of winter. Nothing is narrated: everything is seen.
An evening in a single gesture
An hour and forty minutes, interval included. No plot to follow, no characters to keep track of: the piece is watched the way a record is listened to, and it is as open to seasoned ballet-goers as to those walking into a theatre for the first time.
