Inspired by E. T. A. Hoffmann's tale, The Nutcracker follows a child through her own Christmas night: a battle with the mice, a nutcracker who becomes a prince, a frozen forest, then a kingdom where flowers and snowflakes dance.
First staged in December 1892, the ballet has never left the bill. Alongside Swan Lake, it remains the most frequently staged work in the world — and the only one that sends the audience out humming half its numbers.
A Scènova production
Choreography after Ivanov, sets and costumes created for this tour. In the drawing room, the tree shoots up to the flies in a single movement. In the forest, real snow falls on the dancers for the whole of the scene. In the final act, fireworks light up a castle built to be climbed, spanning the full width of the stage.
We are the producers of this show: the sets, costumes, libretto and cast are ours, and the entire production travels from one city to the next.
Who it's for
For many children, this is their first ballet. Two hours ten with an interval, a story that tells itself without a word, and scenes spectacular enough to hold the youngest to the very end. Ages four and up.
