The Tales of Hoffmann

Three loves, three failures, one mechanical doll. Offenbach's opera recast as a ballet, with chorus and orchestra.

The Tales of Hoffmann is a Scènova production. Choreography, staging, libretto, sets and costumes were all created by our artistic team.

Drawing on the stories of E. T. A. Hoffmann, the work tells of the failed loves of a poet who is also his own narrator. Three women, three dead ends: Olympia the mechanical doll, Antonia who must not sing, Giulietta who wants only his reflection.

Each time, the same malevolent figure changes his name and returns to undo what was beginning. From Munich to Venice, Hoffmann loses everything – except, perhaps, whatever it is that lets him write.

Ballet, chorus and orchestra

Offenbach's score is played in full. Dancers and chorus share the stage, the orchestra is in the pit, and the Barcarolle – the number everyone is waiting for – arrives exactly where it should.

The production has toured France, Belgium and the Netherlands since November 2018.
