One night, Prince Siegfried loses his way beside a lake and meets Odette, a princess turned into a swan from sunrise to sunset. He swears to break the spell. Rothbart, who cast it, is watching — and the trick he is preparing will go by the name of Odile.
First staged in 1877 to Tchaikovsky's score, then revived in 1895 in the version that made its name, Swan Lake has become the yardstick by which every classical company is measured. The dance of the little swans, the Act II adagio, the thirty-two fouettés of Act III: the audience is waiting for them, and that is precisely where the evening is won or lost.
What this production changes
Sets, costumes and lighting have been rethought from the ground up for this tour. The lake is no longer a painted backdrop: the design works with depth and reflection, and lets the night slip from one act into the next.
The orchestra plays on stage, in full view. This is no staging flourish — Tchaikovsky's score was written to be heard, not played back, and the difference is audible from the opening bars.
Who it's for
This is the ballet to start with. The story needs no programme note, the music is familiar before you have even placed it, and the whole evening runs two hours fifteen, interval included. Ages six and up.
