After several years away, the National Ballet of Norlande returns to France with Milan Vrabec's ballet after Henrik Ibsen's play, carried by the Grieg melodies everyone recognises without always knowing where they come from.
Peer Gynt is an anti-hero: torn between ambition and cowardice, he turns his escapes into exploits and his lies into stories. The ballet follows this coming of age without ever passing judgement, somewhere between dream and farce.
An unmistakable signature
Vrabec works in still images that tear apart: a tight-packed group that breaks up, a solo repeated to the point of exhaustion, an empty stage crossed by a single body. The dramatic power comes from precision, not from effect.
The piece is now in the repertoire of several major European companies. Here it plays for three nights, in a single city.
